SAN DIEGO — Widespread rainfall is expected in San Diego County over the weekend, with even more precipitation on the forecast come Monday.
Alex Tardy, a senior meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said the moisture will come from two different storm systems moving across Southern California: one expected Saturday into Saturday night and another on Monday.
The weather official explained that an atmospheric river is “very broad” for the weekend. For those unfamiliar with the term, this refers to a flowing column of condensed water vapor in the atmosphere that’s responsible for producing significant amounts rain and snow.
The first bouts of rain are expected to set in early Saturday morning, with heavier precipitation during the night hours. Tardy said a slight chance of thunderstorms are also possible.
Here’s a look at weekend forecast precipitation levels across the region:
A break in precipitations is expected Sunday, with most of the rain anticipated to end in the morning hours, according NWS predictions. However, elevated surf will continue.
It’s safe to say, motorists can expected a wet commute to start the work week as the second storm is expected to be much wetter than the first.

“Now for the rest of the month, it looks like we don’t get anymore rain, so things will dry out after Monday. It’s a bit of a one-two punch,” said Tardy.
Some showers may linger into Tuesday, with a dry and warmer second half of the week expected, according to NWS.
