SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — San Diego City Council on Monday voted 8-0 to request Gov. Gavin Newsom to then request President Joe Biden to declare a major disaster for the Jan. 22 storm that swept through San Diego, displacing hundreds of residents and causing thousands of dollars in damage.
The county said it has sent damage reports to the state’s office of emergency services and to Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), who will then assess and see if the damages meets the FEMA threshold. The city said so far is has already submitted $50 million in damages.
The city said it has allocated $10 million in the mid-year budget for expenses related to the flooding, and said that $10 million has likely already spent in overtime and expense related to flood mitigation.
The city said on Jan. 22, the day of the flooding, the Public Works Dispatch received 1,027 calls, (404 of them were emergency calls). Then, on Feb. 1, the department received 390 calls, (75 of them were emergency calls).
