CHULA VISTA, Calif. — Chula Vista Councilmember Andrea Cardenas resigned from her position Monday.
Her resignation comes as she and her brother face multiple felony charges, including money laundering.
Cardenas, who represents the fourth district, has had consistent calls from the public to resign, including those from Chula Vista Mayor John McCann and fellow Councilmember Jose Preciado.
In a memo to her colleagues, Cardenas said she made the decision to “prioritize” her mental health.
“In an effort to prioritize my mental health, and the health of my community, I have made the very difficult choice to formally resign effective immediately from my position as Councilmember for our City’s 4th District. It has been an honor and privilege to serve my community and work alongside all of you.”
McCann called the resignation “appropriate” in a statement Monday.
“The resignation of Councilmember Cardenas is appropriate given the seriousness of the criminal charges she faces and the difficulty of maintaining public trust. It’s important that we now move forward together to address the many challenges facing our city.”
Earlier this month, Cardenas, seeking re-election, participated in a candidate forum ahead of the March 5 primary.
