SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — A man was arrested Wednesday morning in connection to the cars set on fire at the FOX 5 station in Kearny Mesa earlier this week, San Diego police confirmed.
The suspect, identified as 41-year-old Dimitrius Cannon, was taken into custody just before 9 a.m. after SDPD responded to an “unrelated radio call” in the 7300 block of Clairemont Mesa Boulevard. No additional details about that call were immediately available.
In the course of the investigation, however, officers identified Cannon as the person wanted for the incident at FOX 5’s station in the 7100 block of Engineer Road two days prior, SDPD said.
FOX 5’s security camera video captured part of the incident, which occurred just after 9:30 p.m.
The suspect was first seen attempting to start a fire at the front door of the FOX 5 building, using small bits of paper and a nearby planter. However, it was unsuccessful.
The suspect was then seen moving to the parking gate where he attempts to burn a keypad. Afterwards, he moves around to the front parking lot where he sets fire to three employees’ cars, destroying at least one.
Several FOX 5 employees ran outside with fire extinguishers to put out the flames before San Diego Fire-Department crews arrived. No one was injured.
Cannon was booked into jail. He could face multiple charges tied to arson and is expected to make his first court appearance later this week, according to SDPD.
