SAN DIEGO — Sliced deep-fried potatoes — arguably one of the most sought after sides for meals of all kinds.
Pairing well with burgers, chicken sandwiches and even standing well on their own, French fries have become a staple bite for eaters across the globe. They are served in a variety of forms, some loaded with toppings and others seasoned to perfection.
With all the options, it’s impressive that one North Park eatery is serving baskets of the best fries in all of California, according to LoveFood. This website is dedicated to food, recipes and reviews.
Researchers and food connoisseurs with the site compiled a list of the best fries in each state. While considering which crispy potatoes deserved recognition, LoveFood analyzed user reviews, awards and accolades. Their site also utilized “the first-hand experience” of its team.
The Smoking Goat Restaurant, a French-American bistro located at 3408 30th St., was named as having the best fries in the Golden State.
Here’s what LoveFood had to say about the San Diego-area restaurant:
“In a state as big as California, which has so many culinary influences, it’s almost impossible to pick the best fries. Only almost, though, as the duck fat truffle fries at The Smoking Goat really are something special. Enriched by being fried in duck fat and drizzled with truffle oil, these crispy fries are then finished with freshly grated pecorino romano. Served alongside a mustard aioli, they taste incredible, whether devoured on their own or paired with one of the restaurant’s luxurious entrées.”
The mastermind behind such delicious fries is Chef Fred Piehl, the founder of The Smoking Goat Restaurant. According to the eatery, “Piehl constantly reads and researches techniques, vendors and chefs to bring fresh insight” to the establishment. This unique spin on French fries falls in line with his methods.
For those who have yet to indulge in these sliced potatoes, the bistro is open Sunday through Thursday from 5-9 p.m., and from 5-10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
